        A message has reached us from the Brazilian Amazon. The echo comes from the Andes and Patagonia. The winds carry it from the waters of the Caribbean. The drums in North America repeat it, and swift messages cross Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile. The voices rise up from the mines in Bolivia, the same from under the heights of Macchu Pichu. They are singing it in Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela. Nicaragua makes it a poem, and in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Panama it is a serious manifesto. The Antilles are dancing it. The word goes out from the Amazon, and begins to move throughout all of America, and in all the towns they are preparing for long trips, like those undertaken from sorrow to hope. And from all the continents of the American continent, from all the worlds they inhabit, men and women begin moving.
        What is the reason for this continental chaos? A new measure by the International Monetary Fund? Another meeting of Chiefs who are not Chiefs, of States that are not States? A soccer match? No, the reason is an invitation. From dignified Brazil, Belem is calling us to the:

        It will be in Belem Do Para from December 6 to 11, 1999.

      From Seattle to Prague, from Quebec City to Qatar, there is a worldwide movement to challenge corporate globalization, as found in the destructive policies of the World Trade Organization (WTO), World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA/FTAA).

      The morning program begins with Founder and Acting Director of International Forum on Globalization (IFG), Jerry Mander who will clarify the links between a multiplicity of issues including trade, technology, poverty, and corporate power. Antonia Juhasz, IFG Project Director, will address the FTAA, the General Agreement on Trades and Services (GATS), and the Threat to the World's Water. Raj Jayadev, Silicon Valley De-Bug, a leading activist, highlighted in the film- Secrets of Silicon Valley, will reveal how the world's shiny capital of hi-technology has overshadowed a darker reality for many youth of color working not "on-line" but "on the line" of chip manufacturing plants, where temporary status and dangerous working conditions are the consequences of the computer revolution. Sasha Khokha, National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, will explain how globalization displaces people from their homelands and how export-oriented production zones, create new waves of refugees who are denied the most basic human rights. Victor Menotti, IFG Environmental Director, will look at the policies of Free Trade and the Debt Trap that are pitting local communities against global corporations in a struggle for the control of natural resources.

      Following these leaders of the worldwide movement to challenge corporate globalization, in the afternoon there will be a variety of workshops by South Bay organizations and activists working for peace, justice, the Earth, and confronting economic globalization.

    Creating Understanding and Co-operation between Different Concepts for a Sustainable Monetary System

      1. Taken all the relevant indicators together, it seems as if there is very little time left to avoid a financial crash of global dimensions
      2. There is no historic precedent for what will happen in such a situation and there is no global institution with the power to ameliorate the consequences of such an event
      3. There are a number of proposals for practical solutions to avoid a crash or to help create a just and environmentally sound sustainable monetary system after the crash
      4. Since nobody knows which idea may be successful and will be applied, it is desirable that everybody who is willing and capable of assisting in this change process understands the main alternatives.
      The discussion is aimed at identifying the differences and commonalities between the various concepts - and how the initiators and proponents may co-operate to achieve the common goal: solving the current monetary problems and contributing to the alleviation of environmental degradation, poverty and the third world debt.

      Attention All Anti-Corporate Globalization, Pro-Democracy Activists! In response to the global call for actions at major international financial centers to protest the Fourth WTO Ministerial meetings, Nov 9-13th in Qatar, a broad-based coalition of student, grass-roots, labor and activist organizations is planning a week of events in New York City with direct actions focused on Wall Street.
      We all want to expand our strategies and continue to build momentum. To do so we need to create a space where diverse groups within the anti-corporate globalization movement can find common ground and work together. Ending corporate rule here at home will help to liberate billions abroad. We propose this summit to explore how we may work in unison to disable the IMF, WTO, FTAA, NAFTA and all the other alphabet arms of the corporate coup, and even more, to explore strategies to disarm their masters- the corporations themselves.
      It will be three days of discussions around short term goals, long term strategies, and broad visions for a post corporate/ post capitalist world. The final structure of all three days is still undergoing some revisions, but it is based on a democratic spokes council model rather than any teach-in style conference that has been more typical up to now for this content. Everyone who comes participates on an equal footing.
      We are specifically not proposing this as a one time conference, but with a (hopeful) stated goal of coming out of these three days with some agreements that lay the groundwork for future gatherings of this kind that share this specific agenda. Hopefully another city's local progressive coalition will agree to host the next meeting of this kind, and perhaps we will even consense to create a newly named alliance to further this work, if that seems necessary.

      Two years after its defeat in Seattle the World Trade Organization (WTO) will meet again, November 9-12, in Doha, Qatar, an isolated Persian Gulf dictatorship, in the hopes of shutting out massive global opposition. In response, people across the globe are localizing their resistance to once again stop the WTO's destructive "free trade" agenda.

      After the tragedies of September 11, as the world mourns, as the US government prepares for war, as racist attacks take place, as our freedoms come under fire, and as the government manipulates this tragedy to push free trade --including dangerous new WTO agreements-- at the November meeting, it is now more important than ever to stand up for global justice as the foundation for peace. Even if the WTO delays its meeting in Qatar, we will go ahead with our actions. Our work for global justice is inseparable from our local community efforts against the day-to-day impact of the global system at the root of our social, economic and ecological problems: environmental racism, skyrocketing incarceration, attacks on immigrant rights, housing displacement, low wages, lousy working conditions and cuts in social services.

      On Sat. Nov. 10 we will support the local environmental justice movement's fight against toxic pollution from Chevron and other industries in Richmond, and for zero dioxin emissions, meaningful local control through an Industrial Safety Ordinance and compensation for damage to residents' and workers' health. Petrochemical giants like Chevron epitomize the corporations that benefit from the WTO and its "free trade policies, devastating local communities and environments across the globe from Richmond and the Bay Area to Nigeria and around the world. Nov. 10 is the anniversary of the execution of Nigerian environmentalist and Ogoni leader Ken Saro Wiwa. On the agenda for the WTO meeting in November are ways to expand corporate control over energy -- including oil.

      From Quito, Ecuador, in the middle of the planet, we send you greetings of solidarity. We are calling on you to be part of the Permanent International Camp for Social Justice and the Dignity of the Peoples, whose aim is to develope a space of action and encounter between persons, organizations and social movements that dedicate ourselves to the construction of a world in which we can all be a part of.

      We struggle against all forms of exploitation, domination, discrimination and against all forms of power that sustain themselves in inhumane, unequal and unjust relationships. Due to its disasterous results that exclude the majority of humanity from the right to a dignified life, we oppose capitalist globalization, neoliberalism and the strategy of annexation and genocide that Plan Colombia and the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA) represent for our peoples.

      Our struggle is against the imposition of a uni-polar world where the economic interests of a fistful of multinational corporations have exclusive priority, while the great majority of the population of the planet is forced into poverty, lacking true democracy and without the most elemental human rights. Therefore, we find it necessary to confront the neoliberal globalization from the perspective of world resistance. The era of communications opens up new possibilities of exchange, debate, criticism and the coordination of our local and regional struggles in a new international context.

      With the fall of the Berlin Wall, they proclaimed the end of history. Supposedly, there was no longer any space for utopias, diversity or hope. Nevertheless, all over the world different forms of struggle and anti-hegemony resistance are emerging, expressed by a wide panorama of organizations, projects and mobilizations that, in spite of their differences, share the same paths. The possibility to construct our utopias has been and continues to be possible.

      Plan Colombia is a Plan of War. Down with the FTAA!

      Mexico, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Haiti, El Salvador, Panama, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ecuador...
      this is the long and incomplete list of North American colonial interventionism in Latin America that has not ended with the end of the Cold War, nor did it begin during said period. Under the pretext of the war on drugs, Plan Colombia is a continuation of this historical process of interventionism, this time under the neoliberal logic. This long term plan intends to "resolve" the Colombian conflict by way of a military solution that justifies the inversion of billions of dollars, which in the end are going to return to the treasuries of the United States through the selling of high technology weaponry and military assesment.

      The effects of the application of Plan Colombia are already being felt in the region with the implementation of the Andean Regional Initiative (ARI): the militarization and expansion of violence, which combined with forced fumigations, instead of affecting the coca crops, is provoking the destruction of regional bio-diversity, the living conditions of the population, and their consequent displacement.

      The interest of the United States and the globalized capitalist project is the control of the natural resources of the Amazons, a large reserve of sweet water, genetic bio-diversity, petroleum and other minerals, as well as the establishment of strategic military positions in the heart of South America in order to contain the growing resistance and mobilization of our peoples.

      The dollarization in Ecuador and Central America and the convertibility in Argentina are the most recent steps in this context, which continue the process of foreign indebtedness and colonial dependency with the long-known outcomes of poverty, social inequality, the concentration and exportation of wealth, all in detriment of millions of human beings.

      In Ecuador, the government of Jamil Mahuad and Gustavo Noboa was overthrown by the indigenous and popular insurection of the 21st of January, 2000. The implementation of the dollar was the last act of Mahuad and the first of Noboa, who was handed over the presidency by the military hierarchy in the Defense Ministery under the supervision of Arturo Valenzuela, the presonal advisor of Bill Clinton.

      Noboa is continuing the neoliberal project, obeying to the letter the orders of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, in agreement with the oligarchic groups of the Highlands and the Coast. The result has been the application of a series of tragic measures such as the insertion of Ecuador in Plan Colombia, the bank bailouts, the increase in the VAT (Value Added Tax), the process of the privatization of strategic sectors of the economy - social security, electricity, communications, water, etc. - and the dollarization of the economy.

      With the new foreign currency, Ecuador finished the year 2000 with an inflation rate of 91%, the highest of the continent. The richest 10% of the population controls 60% of the income, while the poorest 10% subsists with barely 0.6%. Almost 80% of the workers, including children, adolescents and women, are either unemployed or under-employed. According to the World Bank, more than half of the Ecuadorians live in conditions of poverty. Nevertheless, the actual statistics are much more alarming: 80% of the population is poor, which is more than 9 million people, 3 million of which live in extreme poverty. The other side of poverty is expulsion: approximately 25% of the population has migrated in the last five years, primarily to Spain and the United States. The migrants, many of which are professionals, work as "illegals" in inhumane conditions, generating with their economic remittances more earnings than the entire export sector with the exception of petroleum. These are the real results of the recipes imposed by organisms such as the World Bank and the IMF.

      With the militarization of the northern border and the concession and installation of a North American military base in the city of Manta - at the backs of the parliament and without consulting the population -, Ecuador has become involved from head to toe in Plan Colombia, in which the country now plays a crucial role. The neoliberal forces, primarily of the United States, are the ones who impose these politics that affect the region, while at the same time strengthening their own interests.

      The Permanent International Camp for Social Justice and the Dignity of the Peoples ...

      ...is a space of civil resistance that seeks to articulate a wide array of persons, organizations and movements that together reject Plan Colombia, the FTAA and the neoliberal globalization in all of their manifestations. We are going to come together in order to share direct actions, exchange experiences of resistance and to construct alternatives. But this call to mobilization is not limited to a determined place and time: our struggle and our engagement are permanent.

      We believe that another world is indeed possible. Defeating the plans of war we can achieve, with our dedication and hope, the world that we have dreamed since the beginning of our history.

      No More War! Our Cry Will Be Heard!

      The sovereignty of the peoples of Latin America is being violated, the political decisions have a clear direction of exclusion of the majorities, the capitalist economic project does not bring about prosperity, they are selling us war as a viable alternative. It is time to articulate our resistances.

        We ask the public three questions-

          What do you think of the events of September 11th and the U.S. government's response?
          How could we defuse terrorism?
          How could we create a "safer," better, world for our children and all children?

        June 29th- We will be participating in a Solidarity Fast with Jubilee Iraq and Voices in the Wilderness who will be Fasting in Geneva, Switzerland-

          FAST FOR ECONOMIC JUSTICE FOR IRAQ
          JUNE 16 - 30 AT U.N. IN GENEVA, SWITZERLAND

          Chicago, Illinois, United States; & Baghdad, Iraq - International social justice activists (from Iraq, the U.S., the U.K., and elsewhere) will fast at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 16th to June 30th, to demand economic justice for Iraqi citizens. The fast will address the key issues of war reparations claims imposed against Iraq, debt cancellation and reconstruction. Hans von Sponeck will join those conducting the fast on June 16. Mr. von Sponeck resigned as director of the United Nations Humanitarian Assistance program in Iraq in 2000 in opposition to the economic sanctions.

          The fast will coincide with the final meeting of the United Nations Compensation Commission (U.N.C.C.), which takes place from June 28th to 30th in Geneva. The U.N.C.C. will determine how much of a remaining $65 billion in war reparations claims will be imposed against Iraq. These claims relate to the invasion and occupation of Kuwait in 1990-91 by Saddam Hussein's regime. Iraq has paid $19 billion in reparations claims, including over $2 billion since the fall of the Saddam Hussein regime. The U.N.C.C. imposed an additional $33 billion in war reparations claims against Iraq, which are yet to be paid. Virtually all unpaid claims are owed to oil companies or governments. Virtually all claims of individual people are settled and paid.

          Those fasting will present five key demands which must be met, for there to be economic justice for Iraqis:
          1) An immediate moratorium on war reparations payments and claims;
          2) A new U.N. Security Council resolution which cancels all unpaid war reparations already imposed against Iraq;
          3) The elimination of all odious debt, comprising most of the more that $100 bn. of foreign debt, incurred by Saddam Hussein's regime; as determined by an odious debt arbitration tribunal in which Iraq has full due process rights;
          4) The stipulation that no economic conditions be imposed upon Iraq through such mechanisms as an International Monetary Fund (IMF) stand-by-agreement, or otherwise;
          5) Full funding for the reconstruction of Iraq which focuses on the social needs of the Iraqi people, is directed by Iraqis, and without any strings attached.

          In announcing the fast, organizers from Jubilee Iraq and Voices in the Wilderness state:
          "As international social justice activists, including citizens of Iraq, the U.S., and the U.K., we stand united and resolved to seek an end to the ongoing economic exploitation of Iraq. Such exploitation is a form of violence which must be resisted. Those of us who are citizens of the U.S. and U.K. bear a special responsibility as it is our respective countries which created and held firm to the economic sanctions regime which devastated Iraq's health care, education, water, and electrical infrastructure.

          "Iraq is saddled with enormous foreign financial claims incurred by Saddam Hussein and his regime. These claims take the form of war reparations imposed against Iraq for Saddam's invasion of Kuwait as well as the odious debt, coming from loans which financed his regime from 1981-90. These war reparations and this odious debt ought to be canceled without limitations and without any conditions attached.

          "It is neither right nor just that the Iraqi people be required to pay in perpetuity for the regime of Saddam Hussein."

          Jubilee Iraq and Voices in the Wilderness are initiating the fast. Jubilee Iraq was formed in March 2003 as a network of Iraqis and internationals (including lawyers, economists, politicians and aid workers) dedicated to ensuring that the Iraqi people are not unjustly forced to pay Saddam's bills. It is independent and involves people of diverse political opinions who are all united on this issue. In 2004 it organized demonstrations at two UNCC meetings as well as at the Paris Club and the IMF autumn summit in Washington. It organized a conference of Iraqi economists in Berlin, and conducted in-depth consultations with Iraqi civil society and political parties, culminating in a bill which passed unanimously in the Interim National Assembly in November 2004, condemning the odious debt and reparations.

          Voices in the Wilderness was formed in 1996 to challenge and oppose the economic sanctions imposed against the people of Iraq. Voices was formed as a campaign of active nonviolence. Delegations traveled to Iraq, bringing medicine and other humanitarian supplies to Iraqis in violation of the economic sanctions and U.S. law, acts for which the U.S. government seeks to penalize Voices. Voices believes the imposition of war reparations claims against Iraq; demands for repayment of "odious debt," and forced restructuring of Iraq's economy to benefit the IMF and non-Iraqi financial interests, continue the economic and military warfare waged against Iraq since 1991. Voices opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the current occupation of Iraq. Voices also calls for full funding for the reconstruction of Iraq, without strings attached; funding determined by the Iraqi people to be to their benefit and not for the benefit of multinational corporations.

Chet was also the catalyst that brought together Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, which helped shape the San Francisco sound. Without Chet Helms, as many have said, there would be no Grateful Dead, no Jefferson Airplane, no Big Brother and the list goes on and on. He promoted other acts like the Charlatans, the Great Society, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Peter Tosh, The Clash and countless others.   • Complementary Currencies: Money for Local Living Economies
      June 8- June 10, 2006

        It is nearly two years since the E. F. Schumacher Society convened the conference "Local Currencies in the 21st Century." The event drew 300 participants from thirteen countries to Bard College on the Hudson River. It is widely agreed that the conference was a landmark event.

        The sense of community that was engendered was clearly a major cause of its success. But for many its success was that the program illuminated in a new way one of the most mystified subjects of all time: money. Margrit Kennedy demonstrated in her opening presentation that the monetary system in its current form, by its very nature, creates a wealth disparity of class. By the end of the conference those attending understood that money can actually take many forms and the social and economic effect of a system is dependent on its form. Currencies can be invented for the purpose of building a community or for mobilizing unused resources. If shaped correctly a currency can be a tool to empower the small economy: the economy of community and family.

        Those who missed the 2004 E. F. Schumacher conference will have another chance to learn about the new frontier of money. The E.F. Schumacher Society will be co-sponsoring the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) pre-conference on June 8th at Champlain College in Burlington VT, entitled, "Complementary Currencies: Money for Local Living Economies." It’s evident that true reform, not palliatives, are necessary to move humanity back from the brink of nuclear war; away from a World dominated by fraud and ugliness and toward a World of justice and beauty. The conference formulates minimum initial steps to begin this process and put time on the side of humanity instead of against us. You may receive this announcement amidst very depressing news and events, but we urge you to avoid discouragement and instead join with us in this adventure to achieve positive results for America and the world.

        A Different Kind of Monetary Conference

        The situation in which knowledgeable monetary reformers find ourselves is that after years of studying monetary history and theory, we already know many if not most of the broad shapes that monetary reform should take. We know from experience that these views have stood the test of time and many challenges from those with less experience in the field or operating under misconceptions or pursuing non-reform agendas. Rather than merely arguing over these main themes, it is time for those of us who understand, to move forward to implement those elements that we know must be a part of good reform.

        What are these broad national parameters supported by over 3000 years of history? That the control of money systems should shift away from private control toward governmental control. Away from commodity money notions; away from fractional reserve banking – monetizing private credits and loaning them into circulation at interest. Towards money issued interest free by government and spent into circulation for the common good. The system must be morally grounded in fairness.

        Not seeking blind trust, we’ll continue educating and explaining why the proposals are beneficial and moral and continue to present the historical evidence demonstrating that. We’ll answer any serious challenges, and those arising from plain misunderstanding. We may invite selected spokesmen for differing reforms to succinctly present their case. But we’ll do it within a context of advancing the reform agenda, making necessary adjustments as we proceed. Dissenters obviously don’t have to join in the reform phase; but neither need we procrastinate, waiting for all to experience their monetary epiphanies, before moving forward. The direction of world events requires that we begin a solid program now.

        Themes of the Conference

        Therefore the AMI annual conferences focus on three broad areas:

Since the first world encounter in 2001, it has taken the form of a permanent world process seeking and building alternatives to neo-liberal policies. This definition is in its Charter of Principles, the WSF’s guiding document.

          The World Social Forum is also characterized by plurality and diversity, is non-confessional, non-governmental and non-party. It proposes to facilitate decentralized coordination and networking among organizations engaged in concrete action towards building another world, at any level from the local to the international, but it does not intend to be a body representing world civil society.           On Saturday, January 26, at New College, in the Mission district of San Francisco, the Global Commons Foundation and partners will be hosting a large community discussion on the topic of the World Social Forum, global coalition movements, and local activism. The event will begin with a keynote address by leading world-systems and anti-systemics movements scholar Immanuel Wallerstein on the WSF in historical perspective, and will be followed by a dozen respondents (independent activists as well as individuals affiliated with organizations) from the San Fransciso Bay area who can speak strongly to the question of organizing within global movements such as the WSF. Following the respondents the conversation will open up to everyone in the room.

          In addition to being a discussion on the role of the WSF and other anti-globalization, alternmondialisme, and global justice movements, this gathering will serve as a first encounter among individuals interested in forming a Bay Area Social Forum. This will become the most important evolution for society in the coming years.
